Joshua 1:3-5 Commission and Comfort
Fearlessly Living Bible Study
Today is day 2 of the Joshua study Live Fearlessly from Fresh Life Bible Study series
Today’s reading was from Joshua 1:3-5 AMP:
3 I have given you every place on which the sole of your foot treads, just as I promised to Moses. 4 From the wilderness [of Arabia in the south] and this Lebanon [in the north], even as far as the great river, the river Euphrates [in the east], all the land of the [a]Hittites (Canaan), and as far as the Great [Mediterranean] Sea toward the west shall be your territory. 5 No man will [be able to] stand before you [to oppose you] as long as you live. Just as I was [present] with Moses, so will I be with you; I will not fail you or abandon you.
Where are we?
God passed a command to Joshua with a commission to take a step of faith into the land promised. He made promises to Joshua for the present and the future that came to pass through his faith and obedience.
Commission: an instruction, command, or duty given to a person or group of people.
My thoughts
God makes a lot of promises- in his word and to His people. Even with every uncertainty that we can think of if God said He will do it, He will.
But unlike the people in your life who make promises to you like your friends, parents, and partners God never falls short on His promise. Our faith isn’t shaky because God lied to you, your faith is shaky because if my own parents could break covenant promises with me or my spouse why would God keep his?
Of course, we don’t actively think that but we do create invisible barriers each time we are hurt to ensure we never get hurt again unknowingly blocking God out too. In the reading today, Joshua received a promise and comfort. Why would he need to be comforted?
They just spent years in the wilderness, I think they may have had some hurt even with their disobedience, and being reminded that God said what He said is needed sometimes.
To live fearlessly, Joshua needed to trust what God said to him - every word. Walking by Faith is to walk on impossibilities but in order to believe the impossible you have to trust wholeheartedly.
No matter who has hurt you in the past, they can not demerit what God has added.
Actions of faith are required to make literal what God has already made legal, which means that no matter who has hurt you or abandoned you God has spoken to you and promised you certain things and they are going to happen in His timing. God has called us to simply trust what He has said to us no matter what anyone on this earth has said or done to us.
Being obedient and faithful is what Joshua was called to do when he received his orders from God, and He did it for him and all the people of Israel. God’s word and promises are legal decrees which is why we His people can declare and decree in His name and satan has to obey.
If we are unable to walk on the impossible (faith) and do what God has asked of us delays what He has for us.
So if He says, write. Write until you understand why instead of trying to understand before you pick up the pen. He could be preparing you to write novels and manuals that unlock generational wealth or He could be using it to teach you discipline or self-love. You never know until you move in faith.
This is why you hear so many people sharing their testimony of finding success in their life after they submit fully to God and what He was telling them to do. They were denied access at times when they tried to take God’s promises and make them happen on their time not knowing they were denied for a reason.
You didn’t get the house you wanted, but God promised you a house. What you didn’t know was that house sat on a flood plain with a sinking foundation, what if He allowed you to have it? Did it mean you didn’t get what was promised or were you being protected from future curses and disappointments? We don’t know, we aren’t called to know….We are called to believe that God is who He says He is, will provide everything we need, and will do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we ask or think.
Would you be willing to take the commission?
